I now remember why I am not a quilt maker - I have just spent 2 days solid stitching the surface of my fabric. It only measure 60cm x 1.50 metres - enough for a bodice plus. 
There is no way I could do this on a regular basis making quilts. The next step is to melt back the surface, add some fabric spirals on the surface with some gold stitching before I cut out the bodice.
