Well I prepared several others and as I say my hands were hurting so I threw them into the washing machine for less than10 minutes and look.......... 
on the left is my 7" perfect size and on the right look what happened - they shrank to 4"!! The ones at the back are stacked in size - a couple are not too bad. I think I will now have to make more. Of course, the one I found still in the washing machine is this one.... think something went very very wrong there!! :-)
That will teach me!!

Chalk it up to experience, you tried a different technique, it didn't work, you gained experience and we now all know if we wish to make felt flowers the best way is to hand felt them. So thanks for being a pioneer, you've learned a lesson we can all benefit from!
