Question is this.... do I
a)create the full fabric - all three metres then cut out the costume pieces - it will be a huge task and I will end up with several areas of un-used fabrics
or
b) do I cut out the pieces in the black and then apply the red to the surface of the pattern pieces - could this distort the pieces?
or
c) draw out the costume pieces on the background fabric and apply to just those before cutting out the pieces? This would be difficult as some of the pieces are on double fabric.
Right now having written this down I think a) - and use the scrap remains for something else but I don't have a big enough surface to lay out the fabric and iron it at the same time.
What do you think??

I would say C if you can - I've done embroidery on wedding dress bodices that way: marking out the pattern on the fabric, doing the embroidery, then cutting it out to be put together (by someone else!). It seemed to work fine for me.
I would do A because then you know exactly what you are working with. It sounds interesting.
I agree with the previous comment because if you can manage to try the way described in A - will it all look right when stitched together? I made a ladies 'waistcoat' for my C & G and I dyed the silk, cut out the pieces and then stamped a design onto the pieces before stitching - it all looked more 'balanced'

I would do a if I was doing it even if I have more than I would need. It would leave me fabric to sample with or heaven forbid use if I made an error ready to use.
