Washer Challenge and washer painting

I was determined yesterday that the alcohol inks would colour the washers so I stitched the washers into my 'recipe' book first and then found it really difficult to paint them! The ink has to be dropped onto the washers and bleeds all over the place. If you use a brush nothing comes off the brush onto the washers. However it did work they are sort of coloured and the colour stays on. I will now have to find another way of getting the colour onto them.It worked on buttons too - a little better I feel!I'm sorry I have not sorted the washer challenge as I said sometime ago - there have been no more entries so I will get Emma to pick a name from the hat tommorrow and will send the winning entrant a small parcel of hopefully useful stuff.

have you tried washing the washers really well before adding the ink? I know (from the machine shop my dad used to run) that many have oil coatings on them when shipped from suppliers -- a good wash might help.... :-)

Hmm, good tip, QP! MAybe that would help with a lot of the metal "bits" we've all been using :}
What about a light sanding too?

I took a button painting class, and we washed the buttons with alcohol first and dried them before painting. I want to try the inks on them after seeing yours. Sandy

Anna I have alcohol inks for stamping and when I use them for that the ink is applied with a piece of felt that is attached to a wooden block-maybe you could make a wad of white felt (so you can see it)and try dabbing it on the washers.

Have you tried the pens meant for colouring peel-offs? They work well colouring metal brads, so may work on your washers.

Do these washers rust - could they be used for rust dyeing??
