Stash Busting - Stuff Reducing

Whilst doing my usual morning blog reading I noticed that lots of patchworkers are planning Stash Busting challenges for 2009. Some even go as far as writing a pledge such as here - Patchwork Times. Not being a patchworker I have been wondering if this principle can be applied to those of us who have collected a rather large 'Stash' of 'Stuff' over the years - not just fabrics (like patchworkers). I have fabrics, of course, (I even keep the tiny scraps), I have, threads, fibres, paints, inks, papers etc, etc. In fact I have collected mountains of general 'stuff'.

I think I will set myself a similar challenge of NOT purchasing anything textile/art related for 2009 with 4 exceptions (see below) and I will only use up 'Stuff' I have here in my studio - my daughter even suggested that I should jot notes on what I do and put it together into a booklet like my postcard one - I may have a go but am not sure right now.

The four exceptions to not buying anything are:
i) Magazines
a) I subscribe to Cloth Paper Scissors and Quilting Arts
b) I occasionally buy others like Belle Armoire, Crafts.
ii) Books - I can't live without new textile/art books- eg waiting for the next issue of Thr3fold (which I love although I am not a patchwork/quilter).
iii) plain fabric - ONLY calico or cotton and ONLY if I run out of my current stock.
iv) any specific supply for workshops I am teaching or if I am asked for a commission (as if!!) - ONLY if I can't substitute something from my current stock.

As I struggle with committing to a full year right from the start - I have set myself monthly targets instead.

I will start this challenge right NOW rather than wait for 2009.

Good luck with your self challenge Anna. I have been trying to apply the use rather than buy policy over the last few months, sadly it hardly seems to have made a dent in the amount of fabric, therads etc that I have, lol!
