Dressmaking - what me???

I have not done any dressmaking for myself for many years but whilst shopping with my daughter on her birthday this week I kept grumbling about the price of tops which I liked in M&S - £35 for a top - outrageous.  So today I visited my favourite fabric shop in Salisbury (Fabric Land) and purchased two top patterns and four (YES 4) pieces of fabric for just £38.   This will make the tops less than £10 each and the patterns will be an investment for future tops so the price will go down the more I use them :-)

Keep your fingers crossed that the sizing/fitting works out OK - the last time I made myself a top I was a UK size 10 pattern - now I am somewhat larger (but working on a reduction), so am not sure if the patterns will work- but they are lovely!!

I restarted dressmaking about 2 years ago and love it, so I'm sure you will. I do find the pattern sizing very odd though, I am a standard size 10 in shop clothes but sometimes have to cut out 12 or even 14 in the pattern. I've found that measuring the pattern and comparing it to a similar piece of clothing I already have that fits helps to find which size I require. Good luck!

This really interesting as well as the other two sewing posts. I have such difficulty working out pattern sizes. I've just bought a nice pattern online to download but I think I'll have to make a toile first to check sizing. I really enjoyed the great british sewing bee with all its inconsistencies the right person won.
